1. What to Bring:
Comfortable workout clothes—shorts and a t-shirt are fine. Remember to remove any jewellery.
Bring a water bottle and maybe a towel to stay fresh during class.
*If you’ve trained before and own a gi, feel free to bring it along!
2. What Happens in a Typical Class:
Warm-Up: A short stretch or yoga style movements - Designed to improve mobility and prevent injuries.
Technique Learning: A step-by-step demonstration and breakdown of positions or moves.
Drilling: Practice techniques with a partner in a safe, controlled way.
Live Rolling (Optional): Sparring to test techniques—but there’s no pressure to roll on your first day.
3. Etiquette on the Mats:
No shoes on the mats, shoes on when off the mats. This keeps the space clean and hygienic for everyone.
While we aren’t strict about formal etiquette like some gyms, respect is non-negotiable.
Tap to submissions - protect yourself and your partners.
Avoid injuring others - train hard but with care. People have jobs to get to the next day, so let them leave in one piece.
If it’s one of your first sessions and someone feels a bit too intense, check your own intensity and ramp it down, not up. Chances are, you’re going too hard, and they’ll slow down once you adjust. Everyone at the gym has been through this themselves and knows how to take care of you. Once you have more understanding, you can start to ramp it up again.
4. Common Concerns of Beginners:
"Do I need to be fit?" Absolutely not—BJJ builds your fitness over time. You weren’t too stupid to go to school were you?
"Will I get hurt?" With safe practice, a focus on controlled training, and a positive environment, the risk is minimal.
"Is it for me?" Don’t let excuses hold you back. BJJ is for everyone, regardless of age or size. The truth is you won’t know until you try it!

Training BJJ offers so much more than just learning how to grapple:
